Cable Management and USB Bandwidth Constraints

Map cameras, microphones, capture cards, and drives to ports and hubs without hiding bandwidth, power, or serviceability problems.

Good cable management makes devices easier to identify, disconnect, and replace. Hiding every cable inside one unlabelled bundle can make a studio look clean while turning the first failure into a desk teardown.

USB-C describes a connector, not one guaranteed speed, power level, or protocol. Microsoft documents USB-C cases where functionality is limited or a device needs more power. Elgato specifies USB 3.x for Cam Link 4K. Logitech specifies USB-C 3.0 for the MX Brio 705. Confirm the computer port, cable, hub upstream link, and device requirement as a chain.

Map before bundling

Draw every device and the exact upstream connection. Note which ports may share an internal controller; operating-system hardware information can help, but documentation varies. Run the camera, capture, audio, and storage workload together before attaching permanent cable sleeves.

Serviceable cable checklist

  1. Label both ends of every non-obvious cable.
  2. Keep power and data identities visible at the hub.
  3. Provide strain relief without sharply bending connectors.
  4. Leave enough slack for monitor and arm movement.
  5. Keep a known-good spare for critical USB and HDMI links.
  6. Document which computer port owns each critical device.
  7. Test the maximum simultaneous recording workload.
  8. Change one connection at a time when diagnosing.

Cable ties and raceways should follow a proven topology, not define it. Maintain access to adapters and power supplies that may need a restart. Avoid unsupported cable lengths or passive extensions for high-bandwidth paths unless the device documentation allows them.
