Microphone Placement in an Untreated Room
Place a desk microphone to improve direct voice sound and reduce room pickup before buying acoustic panels or another microphone.
In an untreated room, distance is often the most useful audio control. Shure’s home-recording guidance recommends keeping the microphone close to the mouth to reduce unwanted reflections and reverberation. The practical task is to get closer without creating plosives, excessive bass, or a microphone that blocks the screen.
The voice-to-file signal chain
Voice → microphone position and polar pattern → gain → USB or audio interface → operating-system input → recording or call app → headphones
Work from left to right. A plugin at the end cannot fully undo a distant, reflective capture at the beginning.

The SM58 guide documents both unwanted-sound rejection and proximity effect. The AT2020 manual documents a cardioid pattern and side-address orientation. Those details matter because speaking into the wrong side or aiming the sensitive side at a hard wall defeats the placement strategy.
A repeatable starting position
Start with the microphone roughly a hand-span from the mouth, slightly to one side, aimed toward the corner of the mouth. This is an editorial starting point, not a universal manufacturer specification. Speak at the level you use in a real call, record ten seconds, then adjust one variable at a time.
Lower gain after moving closer so normal speech does not overload the input. Monitor through headphones if the microphone or interface supports it. Laptop speakers can feed the microphone and make placement tests misleading.
Use the room you already have
Choose the quietest practical part of the room. A bookshelf, curtains, upholstered furniture, and an open closet can break up or absorb some reflections, but this guide does not assign them laboratory absorption values. Keep the microphone away from bare corners and large reflective desktops where possible.
Turn off noise sources during the sample: HVAC, air purifier, fan, and mechanical keyboard. Then restore the devices you actually need and decide which compromise is acceptable. Do not create a silent test that the normal workflow cannot reproduce.
Placement checklist
- Confirm which side of the microphone is active.
- Put the mouth close enough that direct voice dominates.
- Aim the microphone’s rejection toward the keyboard or noise source.
- Move slightly off-axis if plosives are obvious.
- Set gain after position, not before.
- Record and listen back through headphones.
- Mark the arm, chair, and gain positions.
