Window and Artificial-Light Placement for Video

Place a desk, window, and artificial key light for consistent video without backlighting, glare, mixed color, or daily rebuilding.

A window can be a large, soft source and still be a poor production light because its intensity and color change with weather and time. Decide whether daylight is the system’s key light, a controlled fill, or a source you block. Do not let it drift between all three roles during one recording block.

Microsoft recommends front lighting and avoiding strong backlighting, shadows, and glare for Teams presentations. That is the operational rule. The implementation depends on desk orientation and whether the setup must remain consistent after sunset.

If daylight is the key light

Place the face toward or slightly across the window, diffuse harsh direct sun with a suitable shade, and lock the camera framing. Accept that exposure and color can shift. This path is good for ordinary calls when the schedule follows reliable daylight; it is weak for a course recorded across several days.

If an artificial light is the key

Reduce daylight with blinds or curtains, then place the artificial source above eye level and off camera axis enough to create shape without deep eye shadows. Bring a larger diffused source closer before adding raw output. Keep it outside the webcam frame and avoid reflections in glasses or monitors.

Do not match lights by Kelvin number alone. Color rendering and spectral differences can make sources look different even when their stated color temperature matches. The CRI, color temperature, and flicker guide explains what specifications can and cannot tell you.

Repeatability checklist

  1. Choose daylight-led or artificial-led lighting.
  2. Remove strong light from behind the subject.
  3. Set shade position before camera exposure.
  4. Place and soften the key light.
  5. Turn off overhead fixtures that create eye sockets or mixed color unless they genuinely help.
  6. Check glasses, glossy art, and monitor reflections.
  7. Record a sample with expected camera settings.
  8. Photograph or mark light, shade, chair, and camera positions.

Failure modes

Auto exposure can hide an unstable lighting design during setup, then visibly pump when clouds move or a bright slide opens. Mixed sources can also make one side of the face shift color. A light that clamps securely but must be removed every day may be less useful than a smaller source that stays in position.
