Two-Person Podcast Setup for One Room
Build a two-person podcast signal chain with separate microphones, headphone monitoring, isolated tracks, room-aware placement, and backups.
A two-person podcast is not a solo USB-mic setup multiplied by two. Both microphones hear both voices, two people need monitoring, and a shared desk can transmit every tap into both stands.
Recommended signal chain
Host mic → input 1 → isolated track 1
Guest mic → input 2 → isolated track 2
Computer playback → interface or recorder → two headphone feeds
Recorder or DAW session → verified project folder → independent backup
An interface or recorder with at least two suitable microphone inputs and independent gain controls keeps both voices editable. Confirm that the software records each input to its own mono track; a stereo file with one person hard-left and the other hard-right can work, but explicit isolated tracks are easier to reason about.

Keep each microphone close to its speaker and lower gain accordingly. Do not try to remove cross-talk by putting both people farther from their microphones; that captures more room and makes editing harder.
Monitoring and room checklist
- Give both people closed-back headphones or a proven low-bleed monitoring path.
- Set each gain from that person’s normal and loud speaking voice.
- Record both people speaking separately, then together.
- Listen for cross-talk, plosives, chair noise, table vibration, and headphone bleed.
- Disable speaker playback.
- Label tracks with names before recording.
- Record a hand clap or spoken sync mark if a separate camera system is running.
- Verify both files before clearing the recorder or cards.

What to avoid
Two independent USB microphones can work only when the operating system and recording software reliably support that aggregate path. Do not assume two USB devices will remain synchronized during a long recording. A single multi-input interface or recorder generally gives the session one clock and one control surface, but confirm the device’s actual channel and computer compatibility before purchase.
